NATIONWIDE SHUTDOWN! Sowore Urges Nigeria To Do This Immediately As He Reveals New Update On #EndBadGovernance Protest
Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, has called for a complete shutdown of all socio- economic sectors in Nigeria amid the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. Sowore made this appeal ahead of the fifth day of protests on Monday, August 5, 2024.
Speaking on a Morning Show Program on News Central TV on Sunday, the activist urged Nigerian workers and transporters to refrain from work and join the protest against the country’ s bad governance. He criticized President Bola Tinubu’ s speech, delivered earlier that morning, for failing to address the protesters’ demands.
Sowore, a former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, emphasized that the President’ s speech did not respond to any of the protesters’ 15 demands. He asserted that the public demonstrations would therefore continue.
” They [the government] have nothing to offer you, ” Sowore said. ” Sometimes we ask for too much when we know they have nothing or little to give. What you saw in the speech, which I did not bother to listen to, contains nothing of substance. There is no desire on their part to connect with the issues. We have 15 demands, but none were addressed. Tinubu merely reaffirmed his position that no matter what you do, he will not change your condition. ”
” We encourage those watching and listening to store food, and we urge workers not to go to work and transporters to stay off the highways, ” he continued. ” We want the roads to be deserted. We aim to shut down the system to show that Nigerians, not those in Abuja who are out of touch, are the real owners of the country. ”
Sowore mocked the government’ s response to the country’ s hunger crisis, highlighting the President’ s mention of a garden at the back of Aso Rock where vegetables are grown. ” This government is not serious, ” he remarked.
Sowore also unveiled a list of 15 critical demands compiled from inputs received from Nigerians participating in the #EndBadGovernance campaign. These demands, deemed non- negotiable by the protesters, include:
Scrapping the 1999 Constitution and replacing it with a People- made Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria through a Sovereign National Conference followed by a National Referendum. Abolishing the Senate arm of the Nigerian Legislative System, keeping the House of Representatives (HOR), and making lawmaking a part- time endeavor. Paying Nigerian workers a minimum wage of no less than N250, 000 monthly. Investing heavily in education and providing grants, not loans, to Nigerian students. Pursuing free and compulsory education for children across Nigeria. Unconditionally releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and demilitarizing the South East. Releasing and compensating all #ENDSARS and political detainees.
Renationalizing publicly owned enterprises sold to government officials and cronies.
Reinstating a corruption- free subsidy regime to reduce hunger, starvation, and multidimensional poverty. Probing past and present Nigerian leaders who have looted the treasury, recovering their loot, and depositing it in a special account to fund education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Restructuring Nigeria to accommodate its diversity, resource control, decentralization, and regional development. Ending banditry, terrorism, and violent crimes. Reforming security agencies to stop continuous human rights violations and duplication of security agencies, and enhancing the physical security of Nigerian citizens. Sowore’ s call to action underscores the ongoing struggle for better governance and accountability in Nigeria.
