In a nationwide broadcast on Sunday morning, President Bola Tinubu addressed the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, firmly ruling out the return of fuel subsidy. The President acknowledged that the decision to remove the subsidy was painful but stressed its necessity due to its detrimental impact on the nation’ s economy.
President Tinubu stated, ” The fuel subsidy has become a noose around the economic jugular of our Nation and has impeded our economic development and progress. ” He explained that the subsidy’ s removal was a critical step to address long- term economic issues that temporary solutions could no longer fix.
Addressing the protesters directly, President Tinubu assured that law enforcement agencies would protect the lives and properties of innocent citizens responsibly. He emphasized, ” Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected. ”
The President shared his vision for Nigeria, aspiring to create a just and prosperous nation where every citizen enjoys peace, freedom, and a meaningful livelihood through democratic good governance. In his address, President Tinubu defended the removal of fuel subsidies and the abolition of multiple foreign exchange systems. He explained that these measures were essential to reverse the effects of decades of economic mismanagement.
” These actions blocked the greed and the profits that smugglers and rent- seekers made, ” he said, adding that they also stopped undue subsidies to neighboring countries at the expense of Nigerians.
