The Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has denied allegations that he instructed telecom companies to disrupt network services during the nationwide protests that began on Thursday.
According to Naija News, Nigerians using MTN, Airtel, and other networks have experienced unusually slow internet speeds, sparking concerns that the government might be interfering with network services to hinder the protests.
Addressing these concerns on Channels TV, Tijani stated unequivocally, ” There’ s no instruction to tamper with (phone) networks. ”
He also condemned the looting of the National Communication Commission (NCC) building in Kano State earlier in the day, describing it as a significant setback to the government’ s efforts to promote youth employment through technology.
In a related development, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, revealed that a police officer was killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the IGP reported that the supposedly peaceful protests had turned violent in several locations, resulting in injuries to multiple police officers and the destruction of several police stations.
Egbetokun expressed deep sorrow over the widespread violence, noting that the incidents were characterized by ” mass uprising and looting” rather than peaceful demonstrations. He lamented that despite prior warnings from the police, the protest organizers were notably absent, allowing miscreants to take over the events.
The IGP emphasized that police units across the country are now on high alert. ” Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses, ” Egbetokun said, adding that there was widespread looting of public and private warehouses and facilities.
In regions such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, unprovoked attacks on security personnel were reported. ” One policeman has been reported murdered, and others seriously injured, ” Egbetokun disclosed.
