In a recent court hearing, 40- year- old Cletus Gandu, who is currently unemployed, admitted to stealing two tubers of yam due to his dire hunger.
This incident unfolded in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, where Gandu faced charges of criminal trespass and theft brought forth by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
During the proceedings at the Magistrates’ Court, Gandu expressed his remorse, stating, ” Hunger compelled me to steal yam on two occasions.
I humbly ask for leniency. ” His heartfelt plea reflects the desperation that can accompany food insecurity, a pressing issue in many communities.
The presiding judge, Michael Bawa, acknowledged Gandu’ s guilty plea but decided to postpone sentencing until August 6. In the meantime, he ordered that Gandu be held in custody.
This decision underscores the seriousness of the charges while also allowing the court to consider the circumstances surrounding the crime.
The prosecutor for the NSCDC, Mr. Marcus Audu, provided details about the case, revealing that the complainant, Alice Daniel, reported the theft to the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on July 15.
Audu alleged that Gandu had stolen the yams from Daniel’ s farm in Zonkwa on two separate occasions, asserting that these actions violated sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
