On Monday afternoon, a tragic stampede at the Federal College of Education in Akoka, Lagos State, resulted in severe injuries for at least 50 students. The chaos began when armed policemen invaded the school premises, firing live bullets in an attempt to disrupt the inauguration of the institution’ s governing council.
The policemen were reportedly deployed to the school by the provost, Dr. Wahab Azeez Ademola. The provost had been under scrutiny by students and staff who accused him of corruption and mismanagement of funds. These concerns led to calls for the immediate inauguration of the governing council, which was expected to provide a check on the provost’ s power.
However, Dr. Wahab allegedly resisted these efforts and threatened both staff and student leaders. To prevent the inauguration, he reportedly brought in armed policemen. According to eyewitness accounts and viral videos, these policemen fired bullets and teargas into the crowd of students and staff.
” The shooting caused a stampede and led to unrest in the school, with over 300 students running for their lives. One student was shot in the hand. The Students’ Union has identified at least 50 students who are critically injured, ” an eyewitness said. The police also arrested about 30 people, including students and staff, allegedly at the provost’ s behest to prevent the establishment of a transparent governing system.
Lagos Police Command’ s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, offered a different perspective. He stated that the police were deployed to quell violence allegedly initiated by some staff and students against the provost.
” For over three months, staff of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka locked out their provost, depriving him of his office. A team set up by the Minister of Education arrived at the school to mediate the ongoing impasse, but they were attacked by staff and students, resulting in the damage of several vehicles and the provost’ s official quarters, ” Hundeyin explained.
He added, ” The rioting staff and students also blocked all entrances to the college. The police restored normalcy after being attacked with stones and sachets of water. Meanwhile, 32 suspects have been arrested, and men of the Nigeria Police Force from Area Command, Surulere, remain on the ground to ensure peace is maintained. ”
