The compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM cards was initiated in December 2020 when the Nigerian government directed telecommunication companies to deactivate unregistered SIM cards and those not linked to NINs. The NCC’ s directive to reconnect affected MTN lines highlights the challenges faced by consumers in meeting the policy’ s requirements. In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, NCC’ s Director of Public Affairs, the Commission acknowledged the difficulties the blockages have caused for consumers. ” The consumer is our priority, therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the Commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend in view of the short time available for consumers to undertake the verification of their NINs with their SIMs, ” Muoka stated.
He further emphasized that the reactivation of disconnected lines is a temporary measure. ” Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM, ” Muoka added. He urged members of the public who have not yet verified their SIMs to do so promptly to maintain uninterrupted access to their lines.
