The Department of State Services (DSS) in Katsina State has recovered 2,000 bags of rice allegedly diverted by government officials. These bags were part of a 20-truck consignment donated by the Federal Government to mitigate the effects of the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the rice was discovered in a store at the Central Market, Katsina, following a tip-off to the DSS on Wednesday night. While DSS officials confirmed the incident, they declined to provide further comments, preferring to remain anonymous.
Abdulrahman Abdullahi, Chairman of the Civil Society Organisations in Katsina, expressed shock and disappointment over the diversion. He emphasized that the Federal Government’s palliative efforts were intended for vulnerable populations and vowed to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion. Abdullahi called for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable. Residents of Katsina, including Suleiman Kofar-Durbi, echoed Abdullahi’s sentiments, condemning the diversion as an unfortunate development. Kofar-Durbi urged the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation and bring the culprits to justice, highlighting the severe economic hardships faced by citizens.
Alhaji Shehu Usman, Chairman of the Market Traders Association, revealed that the rice was brought to the market by an individual who was not a trader. The rice was stored in the market at the request of this individual’s brother. Usman advised market members to exercise caution when accepting items for storage from external parties.
Responding to the situation, Aliyu Abdullahi, Principal Private Secretary to Governor Dikko Radda, clarified that the rice was allocated to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, by the Federal Government. He explained that the minister had directed Alhaji Nasiru Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure Development, to store the rice. Lawal then decided to keep it in the market for safekeeping. The allocation to the minister amounted to 1,200 bags of rice.
Abdullahi highlighted the importance of government transparency and accountability in distributing aid. “The Federal Government donated these palliatives to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable in our society. It is disheartening to see such efforts undermined by unpatriotic actions. We will follow this case to its conclusion and ensure justice is served.” This incident underscores the need for stringent measures to ensure that government-provided relief reaches its intended beneficiaries, especially in times of widespread economic distress.
