Primate Elijah Ayodele, the Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against attempting to stop the planned August 1 protest against hardship in Nigeria. Ayodele emphasized that Nigerians are bitter and have developed a strong hatred towards the current government due to the widespread hardship in the country.
In a statement released by his Media Aide, Oluwatosin Osho, Ayodele stressed that the protest will go ahead as planned, but urged the government to take proactive measures to mitigate its effects. He suggested that the government should focus on reducing the prices of essential commodities such as food, fuel, and electricity to alleviate the suffering of the people.
Ayodele explained that the current hardship is affecting both the rich and the poor, as many Nigerians did not anticipate the severity of the economic situation. He warned President Tinubu to beware of those deceiving him that the economic situation is improving, emphasizing that the government needs to take concrete actions to address the challenges facing the country.
The clergy stated, ” People are very bitter and have hatred towards this government. Some states will participate in the protest, while others may not, but definitely, there will be protests. The government needs to take all necessary steps to crash the prices of food, electricity, petroleum, find solutions to insecurity, regulate prices, and others to mitigate the effects of the protest. ”
Ayodele further emphasized that the government’ s assumption- based approach is not realistic and is disconnected from the people’ s pains. He urged the government to adjust its policies and take practical steps to address the hardship, warning that the protest will be a manifestation of the people’ s hunger, pains, and frustration.
The clergy also pointed out that despite the recent increment in minimum wage, Nigerians deserve better welfare and more tangible achievements from the government. He concluded by stating that the government has not done enough to address the people’ s needs, and therefore, the protest will go ahead as planned.
