The presidency has declared that the new national minimum wage would take effect in April 2024. Dada Olusegun, President Bola Tinubu’ s Special Assistant on Social Media, verified this in a post on Tuesday on X, adding that workers will be paid in arrears for their increases beginning with this time. Olusegun provided the information while revealing that President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly requesting approval for the new National Minimum Wage Bill.
President Bola Tinubu has written to the House of Representatives, requesting that they consider the National Minimum Wage Bill. ” When signed into law, the new minimum wage is expected to take effect from April 2024, meaning workers will be paid arrears of their increase from this period, ” according to him. Earlier, Naija News reported that President Tinubu had sent the revised national minimum wage bill to the National Assembly for review and approval.
On Tuesday, the President’ s letter communicating his plea to MPs was read during the House of Representatives plenary session. A similar letter to the Senate was read on the higher chamber’ s floor as well. The President’ s letter to the National Assembly comes after approving a new minimum salary of ₦70, 000 for Nigerian workers last week.
On Tuesday, the bill received its first, second, and third readings in parliament. When passed, the measure will allow Nigerian workers to receive the new minimum salary of N70, 000. The newly passed bill also includes a new provision for review after three years, as opposed to the previous clause, which required a five- year review period.
