On July 22, 2015, five members of the same family from Mazonde village in Zimbabwe faced serious legal repercussions after a failed ritual resulted in the death of a prophet. The accused-Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero, and Nicholas Mutero – were charged with the murder of Prophet Shamiso Kanyama, who had been invited to their home to perform a cleansing ceremony. According to local media, Zed 24 News, the case was brought before the High Court in Harare where the accused were charged with participating in the death of Kanyama. The incident took place in Muzarabani district, situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, and was triggered by a request from the family for spiritual assistance to remove evil spirits believed to be responsible for a series of mysterious deaths within their household.
Prophet Kanyama, a self-proclaimed healer, was invited by the family’s priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti, to address the spiritual turmoil, During the healing ceremony, Kanyama proposed an unusual and dangerous method to demonstrate his spiritual powers: he would be buried alive. He believed that this act would enhance his ability to cleanse the house of malevolent forces. The court heard that Kanyama himself assisted in digging a grave- shaped pit in front of the priest’s hut. After preparing the pit, Kanyama instructed his followers to bury him alive. Despite the ominous nature of the request, the family complied, driven by their desperation for a resolution to their spiritual woes.
Father Zvidzai, who has since become a key state witness, testified that Kanyama was adamant about proceeding with the burial. He laid face down in the grave, and the family began covering him with soil as per his instructions. Despite warnings from Joseph Taderera, who was present at the scene, the men ignored his concerns. Taderera had urged them to stop the ritual, fearing for Kanyama’s life, but Prophet Kanyama insisted that he would emerge from the grave unharmed. According to Taderera’ s testimony, Kanyama dismissed the warnings as interference with his spiritual process. He urged the family to continue with the burial, assuring them of his eventual resurrection. Tragically, when the grave was reopened, Kanyama was found dead, unable to fulfill his promise of emerging alive. The failed ritual resulted in a dramatic legal case, with the five accused now facing charges of murder. The court proceedings have drawn attention to the dangerous practices sometimes employed by individuals claiming to have spiritual powers. The trial continues to unfold, highlighting the severe consequences of such misguided rituals and the importance of adhering to safety and rationality in spiritual practices.
