The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have issued a stern warning that Nigeria may face severe consequences if anything happens to their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is reportedly in poor health while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
IPOB claims that Kanu’ s health is rapidly deteriorating and has demanded his unconditional release to allow him to seek medical treatment.
In a statement released by IPOB’ s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the organization emphasized the urgent need for Kanu’ s release due to his critical health condition. The statement accused the Nigerian government of provoking IPOB by continuing to detain Kanu, despite court orders for his release.
Powerful highlighted that the Nigerian government has consistently ignored these court orders, exacerbating tensions with IPOB. He urged the government to immediately release Kanu so that he can receive necessary medical care.
According to IPOB, the refusal to release Kanu is a deliberate act of provocation by the government, which could lead to unpredictable and severe consequences.
IPOB’ s statement also referenced the support for Kanu’ s release from various prominent Nigerians, including religious, traditional, and political leaders, as well as 50 members of the National Assembly.
The group criticized President Tinubu’ s administration for continuing the policies of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, by refusing to release Kanu. They noted that the government has dropped similar charges against other activists, yet remains steadfast in detaining Kanu.
The statement detailed how the government had discontinued cases involving two Yoruba activists and a Fulani militia leader without any court judgments, while ignoring existing local and international judgments that ordered Kanu’ s release.
IPOB sees this as an example of the systemic injustices faced by Ndigbo (the Igbo people) and views it as a targeted act against their non- violent struggle for Biafra’ s independence.
Despite the government’ s high- handed approach, IPOB reiterated its commitment to a non- violent struggle. They stressed the critical nature of Kanu’ s health and warned that any harm to him would result in dire consequences for Nigeria.
The group asserted that Nigeria would face severe instability, potentially to the point of ceasing to exist as a unified nation, if anything adverse happened to Kanu.
