President Bola Tinubu said that the amended minimum wage bill would be transmitted to the National Assembly the following week. Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said that this decision was adopted at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday, July 15, 2024. Idris reports that the President will meet with representatives of Organized Labor on Thursday, July 18, prior to sending the legislation.
This meeting’ s objectives are to reconcile the recommended minimum wage computations and conclude talks. According to Vanguard, the President has been provided with two distinct proposals by the Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage: N62, 000 from the government and business sector, and N250, 000 from organized labor. President Tinubu has pledged to reconcile these statistics before bringing the final draft to the National Assembly for consideration.
The administration plans to offer a supplemental budget in addition to the new minimum wage bill in order to pay for the pay increase. The Minister of Budget and National Planning has. been tasked with presenting a 2024 budget amendment to the National Assembly the following week. Meeting with Organized Labor and sending the bill and budget amendment afterward are seen as crucial first steps toward ending the ongoing negotiations over the increased minimum wage.
On this issue, state and federal governments, as well as organized labor, have differed. Legal expert Okanlawon Gaffar recently stated to Legit. ng that a uniform minimum wage may not be appropriate in every jurisdiction. He suggested allowing each state to determine its own minimum wage based on its own sources of income and financial resources. The law’s transmission, the planned conference with labor unions, and the budget amendment all indicate that a new national minimum wage would be implemented.
