Four security guards, Victor Odeh, Jeremiah Negedu, Ubi Mbeh, and Idris Olatunji, are facing trial for allegedly conspiring to steal from St Agnes Catholic Church, Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Bassey, alleged that the defendants, who are all security men of the church, conspired to steal #250, 000 from the offering box and 50 liters of diesel worth #50,000.
The defendants allegedly gained entrance into the chapel by pretending to bring in a sick patient to the Church hospital, using their own key to access the premises.
Once inside, they opened the offering box and stole the money and diesel.
“The defendants, who are all security men of the church, connived with the last defendant, Olatunji, to come into the premises to steal.
“Olatunji pretended he was bringing in a sick patient to the Church hospital. and with the help of others, gained entrance into the chapel with their own key.
“Then they opened the offering box to take the money. They also took 50 liters of diesel, “Bassey reported.
The prosecutor stated that the defendants’ actions contravened Sections 287, 311, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
Section 311 specifically stipulates a 7- year imprisonment term for anyone who breaks into a building ordinarily used for religious worship and commits a felony.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the Magistrate, M. O Tanimola, granted them bail for ₩100, 000 each with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties must be gainfully employed and reside within the court’ s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned until July 16 for mention.
The defendants’ actions have raised concerns about the security and integrity of religious institutions, and the need for vigil.
It is indeed a saddening event that the men entrusted with the duty of keeping life’ s and property safe have now taken up the responsibility of being a threat to life and property.
