Major Hamza Al- Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, recently shared details about the circumstances surrounding Abacha’s death.
Contrary to widespread rumors that Abacha died after eating an apple from his concubines, Al- Mustapha clarified that the late leader succumbed to a sudden illness.
Al- Mustapha recounted that Abacha s health took a drastic turn on June 7, 1998, following a handshake with one of the security personnel who accompanied President Yasser Arafat of Palestine at the Abuja International Airport.
Al- Mustapha observed an immediate change in Abacha’ s demeanor and promptly informed the Aide-de-Camp, Lt. Col. Abdallah, who advised maintaining close surveillance on the Head of State.
By the evening of June 8, 1998, Abacha’ s condition had worsened. Around 6 p. m., his doctor administered an injection to stabilize him and recommended he rest. However, by 5 a. m. the next day, security guards rushed to inform Al- Mustapha that Abacha’ s condition had become critical.
Initially suspecting an attempted coup, Al- Mustapha diverted the officers’ attention as he made his way to Abacha’s residence. Upon reaching the Head of State’ s bedside, he found Abacha gasping for breath.
In a desperate bid to help, Al- Mustapha knelt beside him and requested permission to touch and carry him, a protocol break necessitated by the urgency of the situation.
Receiving no response, he realized the gravity of the situation. Al- Mustapha immediately summoned Abacha’ s personal physician, Dr. Wali, who arrived within eight minutes.
Despite administering two injections- one to the heart and another near the neck-Dr. Wali could not revive Abacha. He then informed Al- Mustapha that the Head of State had passed away and that nothing further could be done.
