7 Heartless Men And Women Get Life Imprisonment For Burning Two Sisters To Death, SEE Why They Did It
On Friday, July 12, 2024, the High Court of South, Eastern Cape Division, Mthatha, sitting in Ntabankulu, sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for burning two sisters to death after being accused of witchcraft.
Luxolo Tyali, NPA Regional Spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Division, stated in a statement that the court found them guilty of two counts of murder and arson and sentenced them to two life sentences and ten years, to run consecutively. The Mzazas and Nonjojos are biological brothers, and all of the convicted individuals are from the Ngonyama. Administrative Area in the EmaXesibeni (previously Mount Ayliff) district, where the crimes were perpetrated, according to the statement.
On 12 December 2018, the group of young people attended two meetings convened by the oldest Mzaza brother, Lwandiso, and it was decided that the deceased must be k! lled by burning them since they were performing witchcraft.
They pooled their money and purchased petrol to burn the deceased, their homes, and their families. On the same night, Nothethisa Ntshamba was at home with her husband, three children, and her sister, Ntombekhaya Ndlanya. When Nothethisa and her sister left the house, they were approached by the group, assaulted, pelted with stones, poured with fuel, and then set on fire. The mob then burned down the Ntshamba residence to ashes.
During the trial, all of the defendants pled not guilty and questioned their identities, claiming that it was at night. Rhayisa, who had confessed to the police, attempted to remove herself from it, resulting in a trial-within-a- trial. The court determined that the confession was admissible. The state led the evidence of the eyewitnesses, some of them were the deceased’s children.
Senior State Advocate Mbulelo Nyendwa told the court that violence against women accused of spurious witchcraft was widespread not only in the Eastern Cape, but throughout the country. He went on to say that the children of the deceased had not only lost their moms, but they had also been displaced, fearful for their lives and still carrying the stigma of being referred to as witches’ children by some members of the community.
