Just In! ! Representatives Want Wike Removed As FCT’s Minister And Other 6 Council Chairmen Sanctioned For Insurbordination
The House of Representatives is escalating tensions with the Federal Capital Territory’ s leadership by seeking sanctions against the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, and six Area Council Chairmen. This move comes after repeated instances of what the House perceives as insubordination and disrespect. The conflict underscores deeper issues of accountability and governance within Nigeria’ s political landscape.

During a meeting of the House Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary Matters, Rep. Ikonne Ifeanyi expressed frustration over the refusal of Wike and the council chairmen to honor invitations to appear before the House. Ifeanyi viewed this as a blatant display of disrespect and an affront to the authority of the legislative body.
” Why must we invite someone here and they decide the date they will appear? What about the risk people took to be there? We should not be seen pleading for them to appear before us, ” Ifeanyi remarked. ” My decision is that they should be the ones to look for us. If we don’ t stop this arrogance, it will not stop. Henceforth, we will not approve anything for both the minister and the area council chairmen, and as a matter of fact, we will tell the president to remove Wike as the FCT minister. ”
The committee, determined to uphold its oversight responsibilities, hinted at potential punitive measures. They are considering invoking their powers to ensure that the area councils operate in the best interests of the people. Rep. Adesola Adebayo (APC- Lagos) reinforced this stance, drawing from his experience as a former council chairman of Apapa Local Government in Lagos State. He stressed that the council chairmen should recognize the authority of the House, akin to how local governments defer to state Houses of Assembly.
” It is disrespectful and disregarding for the House of Representatives for them not to have shown up, ” Adebayo said. He characterized the council chairmen’ s refusal to appear as an affront and called for maximum pressure to be applied to ensure accountability.
Other committee members echoed these sentiments. The committee criticized the perception that the FCT minister and the council chairmen viewed the legislative body as subservient. They stressed that such a dynamic would not be tolerated. Rep. Nurudeen Abbas (PDP- Oyo) suggested a more diplomatic approach, proposing that the minister and council chairmen be given one last opportunity to comply.
” Let’ s communicate with them again, and if they fail to appear, then we should sanction them, ” Abbas recommended. This approach was seen as a final chance for the accused parties to rectify their perceived disrespect before facing formal consequences.
The committee’ s resolve to discuss the matter further in a closed session, as suggested by Rep. Sada Soli (APC- Katsina), underscores the seriousness with which they view the issue.
