President Bola Tinubu’ s recent approval of the Ministry of Livestock Development has sparked a heated controversy, with Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure in the Biafran movement, vowing resistance against the ministry’ s implementation in Biafraland.
Ekpa took to social media platform X to express his opposition, stating, ” You can create Ministry of terrorists (ministry of livestock) in Nigeria, not in Biafraland. If you create it in any Biafra territory, we will burn it down the next day. ” He further warned against including Biafra territory in the ministry’ s scope, threatening to destroy any associated infrastructure.
This development comes after the National Livestock Reforms Committee recommended the creation of a ” Ministry of Livestock Resources” to address the long- standing farmers- herders crisis. The committee, led by former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, submitted a 21- point recommendation to President Tinubu in September 2023.
Ganduje emphasized the need for a strong institution to tackle the complex challenge, which involves addressing the needs of various herder groups and promoting peaceful coexistence. However, Ekpa’ s response suggests that the ministry’ s creation may face resistance in certain regions.
The controversy raises questions about the federal government’ s approach to addressing the farmers- herders crisis and its ability to balance the interests of diverse groups. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to Ekpa’ s threats and ensure a peaceful implementation of the ministry’ s objectives.
