Four Men From Bayelsa Receive 160- Year Prison Sentence After What They Did To An Ex- Commissioner
A Nigerian court has sentenced several men to 160 years in prison in Bayelsa, the verdict was delivered after they committed the offenses for which they were convicted. It was reported that the convicts belonged to a notorious kidnapping gang that had been terrorizing the residents of Bayelsa. Their conviction stemmed from the abduction of a prominent politician, but there’ s more to the convicts’ story, which will be detailed here.
The Bayelsa State High Court located in the Ogbia Local Government Council Area has handed down a 160- year prison sentence to four men named Kingsley Obhesi, Joshua Abi, Gift Damene, and Powell Inegite for the kidnapping of the former Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Federal Otokito. The victim was rescued, and the kidnappers were arrested, brought to trial, and subsequently convicted.
The gunmen stormed the Otuokpoti community in Ogbia LGA, causing chaos by shooting indiscriminately to instill fear. Amidst the panic as residents fled for safety, the assailants forcibly entered the home of the former Commissioner for Trade and Investment and abducted him. The kidnappers transported him to the Igbomotoru forest in the Southern Ijaw area of the State, intending to hold him for ransom.
However, their plans were foiled when operatives from Operation Puff Adder, headed by Supol Chris Nwaogbo, discovered their hideout. During the operation, four of the kidnappers were captured. Initial investigations revealed that these men were working for a former militant leader from the Southern Ijaw LGA. The four accused were brought before the State High Court, where each received a 40- year prison sentence for charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms.
The presiding judge, Justice S. W. Amaduobogha, after considering the evidence presented by the police prosecutor, affirmed that the case was substantiated beyond reasonable doubt. The judge also commended the police for their thorough and diligent investigation.
The victim was safely rescued with no injuries, and the kidnappers’ plans to demand ransom were thwarted. If law enforcement can capture and prosecute other kidnappers targeting citizens swiftly, Nigeria will undoubtedly become a safer country.
