Prominent Labour Party (LP) chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has asserted that the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is primarily due to ethnic bias. Okonkwo made these remarks during an appearance on Arise TV’ s ” NewsDay” program on Wednesday, where he discussed the ongoing detention of Kanu by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the DSS since June 2021, following his extradition from Kenya. He is currently facing terrorism charges brought against him at the Federal High Court. Despite numerous calls for his release, Kanu remains detained, a situation Okonkwo attributes to ethnic prejudice.
In recent months, there has been a significant push for Kanu’ s release, particularly from stakeholders in the southeastern region of Nigeria. In June, a group of 50 members of the House of Representatives petitioned President Bola Tinubu to order Kanu’ s release. Additionally, the South- East Governors’ Forum recently resolved to meet with President Tinubu to discuss a political solution for Kanu’ s situation.
The southeast region has seen a rise in violent activities by gunmen enforcing a sit- at- home order every Monday to demand Kanu’ s release. This unrest underscores the urgency and complexity of the issue at hand.
Okonkwo further contended that Kanu’ s continued detention only serves to elevate his status and diminish the government’ s credibility. ” He is now more like a political prisoner. The longer Nnamdi Kanu is in prison, the taller he becomes and the shorter the government becomes, ” Okonkwo remarked, stressing the symbolic power Kanu has garnered during his imprisonment.
In conclusion, Okonkwo called on the federal government to emulate the leniency shown to other separatist figures by releasing Kanu.
