In a tragic turn of events, an unidentified man met his demise while attempting to steal transformer cables belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). The incident, which took place in the early hours of Friday, has brought to light the grave issue of electricity vandalism in the region.
Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications for EEDC, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Friday. According to Ezeh, the lifeless body of the suspected vandal was discovered near a distribution transformer located around Missionary Avenue in Coal Camp, Enugu. Ezeh described the incident as ” tragic and very unfortunate” and expressed concern over the increasing rate at which vandals target electricity installations within EEDC’ s network.
” Vandalism has been a big challenge to the company, and there is no way this can be addressed without the support of critical stakeholders, ” Ezeh lamented. He further noted that the rampant attacks on electricity infrastructure have significantly impacted the quality of service provided to customers and have adversely affected the company’ s revenue.

In a related development, EEDC also addressed misinformation circulating on social media regarding their prepaid meter application process. A video made by Mazi Okechukwu Cyril Nwuche, who claims to be a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the Anambra State Chairman of the South East Electricity Consumers Association, falsely asserted that EEDC is offering free prepaid meters to customers.
