As stated by The PUNCH, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has guaranteed labor unions and citizens of Nigeria that the current talks will result in an increase in the minimum wage. This commitment comes under intense strain and a range of expectations from various sources.
The governors collectively rejected the N62, 000 minimum wage that the federal government had earlier recommended, citing budgetary concerns. They contended that borrowing money would be necessary for many governments to afford this suggested wage hike.
Organized labor, however, is unwavering in its quest for a N250, 000 minimum wage— a far greater amount. The Federal Executive Council delayed the discussion of the minimum wage on Tuesday, and in light of these difficulties, the governors called an emergency meeting.
President Bola Tinubu planned this postponement to give himself more time for comprehensive deliberations. A statement issued by NGF acting Director of Media Ahmed Salihu was the outcome of the meeting, which lasted until the wee hours of Thursday. The publication detailed the forum’ s talks on the proposed national minimum wage as well as other important national problems.
” The Forum received a presentation from the Minister of Women Affairs on the World Bank- Nigeria for Women Project Scale- Up, along with other activities of the ministry. Members noted the importance of the project and emphasized the need to implement it at the state level as initially conceived, as the states are the primary obligors of the project, ” the communique stated.
It continued, ” The Forum discussed the new National Minimum Wage. The governors agreed to continue engaging with key stakeholders to reach a mutually agreeable solution. We remain dedicated to the process and assure that better wages will result from the ongoing negotiations. ”
The World Bank- Nigeria for Women Project Scale- Up is important, and the 36 state governors stressed that state- level execution is required. They recognized that the states were primarily responsible for carrying out this undertaking in an efficient manner.
