No More N62000? See Action NLC Took After FEC Made Unexpected Decision On New
Minimum Wage Proposal Members of the organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have scheduled an emergency meeting following the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) decision to defer the memo on the minimum wage. This urgent assembly is set to take place at Labour House, Abuja, at 10: 00am on Wednesday.
A senior official at the NLC headquarters, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the primary agenda of this meeting is to deliberate on the FEC’s decision. This response comes after the FEC, during its latest meeting, addressed all 39 items on its agenda except for the minimum wage memo.
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation,
Mohammed Idris, the Tripartite Committee, which includes representatives from local governments, states, the federal government, and the organised labour, submitted a comprehensive report on the minimum wage. However, the council could not reach a decision due to the complexity involving multiple stakeholders including local governments, state governments, the federal government, the organised private sector, and labour unions.
Idris emphasized that the memo was postponed to allow President Bola Tinubu to engage in broader consultations before presenting it to the National Assembly. This step aims to ensure a more inclusive and considerate approach to the minimum wage issue.

The organised labour had previously demonstrated their determination by initiating an indefinite strike earlier this month, which significantly disrupted economic activities for two days. This action was a move to press their demands for a new minimum wage amidst rising living costs and economic challenges.
The Tripartite Committee’s recommendations have been a contentious issue. The proposals include a N57, 000 minimum wage suggested by state governors, N62, 000 by the organised private sector, and N250, 000 by labour unions. The federal government’s offer stands at N62, 000, reflecting a substantial increase from the current N30, 000 minimum wage but still falling short of the labour unions’ demands.

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has expressed reservations, arguing that a higher minimum wage could strain state finances, leading to potential borrowing just to meet salary obligations. who highlighted the financial and logistical challenges of implementing such a significant wage increase in the public sector, Moreover, the broader economic context has exacerbated the urgency for a revised minimum wage. The removal of fuel subsidies, significant devaluation of the Naira, and rising energy tariffs have collectively escalated living costs by over 400%. These factors have intensified the economic hardships faced by workers, making a substantial wage increase a critical issue for labour unions.
