Fifty House of Representatives members representing different political parties and regions in Nigeria have come together to send a powerful message to President Bola Tinubu. In a formal letter dated June 19, 2024, the group known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East urged President Tinubu to exercise his constitutional authority as stated in Section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
Their primary objective is to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra who is currently detained. The lawmakers underscored the urgency of their request by highlighting the escalating challenges that the southeast region of Nigeria is facing.
They called on President Tinubu to implement a presidential peace strategy that will address the underlying socio-political and economic issues exacerbating the instability in the area, in addition to endorsing Kanu’ s release. Prominent figures including Hon. Obi Aguocha (Abia), Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere (Imo), and others from all around the nation. signed the letter, which also begged the President to direct Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, Attorney- General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to use his discretionary powers under Section 174(1) of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. They said that by taking this action, Kanu’s prosecution would come to a close and his release would be made possible. The lawmakers expressed their belief that such activities are necessary for promoting inclusivity, stimulating discourse, and restoring peace in Nigeria by drawing analogies with previous executive decisions involving similar judicial proceedings.
They emphasised that dialogue has more potential than drawn-out legal proceedings to resolve conflicts and advance economic growth in the Southeast. With optimism that President Tinubu would view it as a major step towards reuniting the country and proof of his commitment to upholding democratic ideals, the legislators concluded their appeal for assistance. They reiterated their endorsement of Tinubu’s RENEWED HOPE” programme, arguing that all Nigerians will gain from the reforms carried out under his direction.
