The National Assembly’ s continuing discussions over establishing a new state for the Southeast have prompted Chief Hon. James Ugwu, the chairman of the Adada State Creation Movement, to respond.
During the interview, the Chairman reiterated that Adada ought to be the state established in the Southeast to promote equity, justice, and fairness, cautioning against taking any action that would go against this. He also want that northern part of Igbo will not join southeast regional government federal government ever approves it.
In the said interview, he said ” If a state will be created in Southeast to make up six states as other regions of the country, with some having more, and you give that slot to southern Igbo land, they will be having four, and then the northern part will have only two. And you are thinking about regional administration! States are created for development and not for crisis. If they create one from southern Igbo, it is crisis that they are looking for.
” We will not be part of any regional administration in Southeast if that is done, and we have the constitutional right to determine where we shall belong. If they have four states, and we have two, normally one goes to the centre by representation. If we are required to send in two representatives, they will bring eight, and the northern part will bring four. We would have become slaves. We would not be part of that kind of arrangement.
Advocates of the development of Adada state are pleading with well-known officials of the IGBO to back Adada’ s establishment as the region’ s sixth state. In Enugu, representatives of the Adada state creation movement issued the request.
An apparent new danger appears to be emerging for the ongoing effort to establish a second state in the Southeast geopolitical zone. Members of the zone from the National Assembly’ s two houses recently changed missions to create more states.
They moved the zone from five to six states, which is why they advanced. The most recent call came from Imo State representative Ikenga Ugochinyere in the House of Representatives. introducing a measure from Senators Ned Nwoko and Ndidi Elemelu to establish Orlu State.
Delta State advocated for the Igbo- speaking regions of the state to be elevated to the sixth rank in the South East region.
