The well-known Igbo socio-cultural organization Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has recommended the Federal Government to take advantage of the negotiation offer made by the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This plea is being made in the midst of the ongoing conflicts and tensions in Nigeria’ s southeast.
Nnamdi Kanu, who is on trial for treasonable offenses before the Federal High Court in Abuja before Justice Binta Nyako, expressed his preference for an out-of-court settlement. Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act was requested by his principal attorney, Mr. Ejimakor Aloy, in order to encourage peacemaking and cooperative outcomes in both criminal and civil matters. The Federal Government’s attorney, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, had previously stated that the timing was. improper for these negotiations, but Ejimakor asserted that they had spoken with him.
In response to Kanu’ s proposal, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the national president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, issued a statement urging the federal government to take advantage of this opportunity for peacemaking. He underlined that the Igbo community has consistently pushed for a diplomatic approach to end Kanu’s predicament and that Kanu’ s readiness to hold negotiations is a crucial first step toward establishing peace in the South-East. “No price is too high for peace, ” stated Okwu, highlighting the necessity of safety and tranquility in the region in light of the years-long destruction the South-East has experienced.
We respectfully ask that the Federal Government confer with Kanu in order to preserve peace and security and end the unrest in the South-East. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is regarded as the father of the nation, needs to start the dialogue process as soon as possible. Violence and unrest are still prevalent in the South-East, and they are often linked to the activities of IPOB and other separatist groups. This serves as the background against which Ohanaeze is pleading.
