The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for restraint in addressing the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu, currently in South Africa, should not be pressured into declaring a state of emergency.
This statement follows an appeal by Chief Tony Okocha, the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, who urged the Federal Government to consider drastic measures, including the declaration of a state of emergency, citing what he described as a “full-blown war” in the state. Okocha’s appeal is based on claims that the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is helpless and that the police. have shown bias in handling the tenure elongation issue involving former local government chairpersons.
In response, Nze Chidi Duru, the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, asserted that there is no valid reason to involve the president in the state’s turmoil. He stressed that the situation should be managed by law enforcement agencies.
“This is my personal view. This issue falls within the jurisdiction of law enforcement agents, and it is inappropriate to involve the president.. We operate within a democracy, which is fundamentally based on the rule of law, procedures, and adherence to court orders, “Duru stated. He further explained that involving the president in isolated state matters undermines the democratic process. ” Mr. President cannot be dragged into matters that are within the scope of state functionalities.

Simultaneously, a faction of the Rivers APC loyal to former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed the caretaker committee’s call for a state of emergency. Darlington Nwauju, the faction’s spokesperson, clarified that such a call was never discussed among party members. “I wish to inform the people of Rivers State that the APC did not convene any meeting or consult its leaders to decide that demanding a state of emergency is the best approach to the current political crisis.
There were no consultations or meetings, and thus this cannot be considered the collective opinion of the APC members across the 390 wards in Rivers State, Nwauju said. He urged that the crisis be addressed through other means, calling the suggestion of a state of emergency unnecessary, illogical, and unpatriotic. “Rivers State must have other ways to resolve these political issues, “he concluded.
