TRADITION Or WHAT? Unveiling Tribes In Nigeria Where Husband And Children Die If The Wife Commits Adultery
This particular tradition is prevalent among the Isoko and Urhobo communities in Delta State. When a wife commits adultery, it is believed. that her children will fall ill, and in some cases, this can lead to their death.
This cycle continues until the husband also dies, unless the wife confesses and performs the necessary rituals to appease the gods or ancestors.
This belief is deeply ingrained, even among devout Christians, who often say, “You must go to the village to perform the sacrifices.”
Upon investigation, it becomes clear that this tradition is sexist, as there are no consequences for a husband’ s adultery.

This tradition is mainly practiced by the Anioma, Isoko, and Urhobo communities in Delta State. A woman married to a man from these areas is forbidden from engaging in sexual relations with anyone other than her husband.
If she does, severe consequences ensue for her and her family, bringing a curse upon her household. This curse only holds if the bride price has been paid and the traditional marriage rites are complete.
The Itsekiri community is exempt from this tradition. If the bride price has not been paid, the curse does not apply, and if the husband is not a native of Delta State, the curse is also ineffective.
This tradition is highly discriminatory, targeting women while granting men freedom. It contradicts principles of equity and justice. Fidelity in marriage should be expected from both partners, and this biased tradition must be abolished.
