WAHALA! 36 State Governors in TROUBLE As Senate, Reps Make Fresh Announcement Over New Minimum Wage
On Friday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, announced that the National Assembly plans to introduce a bill requiring all 36 states in Nigeria to follow a new minimum wage law.
This announcement was made in Abuja, where Adaramodu discussed ongoing talks between the Federal Government and organized labor groups about setting a new Minimum Wage
The Federal Government has proposed a new minimum wage of N62, 000, but the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are asking for N250, 000. However, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum has rejected the Federal Government’ s proposal, saying some states might need to borrow money to pay the N62, 000 wage.
Despite this, Senator Adaramodu emphasized that the new law would ensure that everyone follows the new minimum wage. “We are going to draft a watertight bill that the President will sign to ensure compliance as law, ” he said. The proposed law would not only apply to the Federal Government but also to state governments, local governments, and private businesses. Those who do not follow the law would face penalties.
Senator Adaramodu assured that the National Assembly will work hard to make sure the new bill is clear and enforceable. “We will invite legislators and organized labor to contribute to making the law. There will be clear sanctions for those who do not comply, he added.
When asked about how quickly the bill could be passed, Adaramodu said, “If possible, we will pass it within 30 minutes. It depends on the consensus reached between the Federal Government and organized labor.”
He is confident that the bill will be quickly approved once there is an agreement on the new minimum wage. If the bill is presented right after Sallah, we will handle it swiftly for the benefit of Nigerian workers,” he concluded.
