Police Inspector Sentenced To Death For Killing Phone Dealer
The Delta State High Court in Asaba condemned Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Delta State Police Command to death for murder. On Tuesday, a court presided over by Justice C. D. Diai convicted and condemned Ebiri to death for the murder of Mr Onyeka Ibeh, a phone trader from Asaba. Delta Police Inspector Sentenced to Death for Killing Phone Dealer.
On April 5, 2023, Ibeh, a prominent phone trader in Asaba, was shot dead at a police roadblock on Ugbolu Road in front of his pregnant wife. The police squad stopped the pair to conduct a search. The deceased waited in his car for assistance, but when the authorities did not appear, he chose to drive away. The police inspector opened fire on the vehicle, and the bullet struck the late Ibeh in the head. Unfortunately, he died on the scene.
The shooting of the phone salesman sparked protests by teenagers in Asaba’s streets and at police headquarters, demanding justice. The prosecution, led by Mr. E. H. Edema, a director in the Ministry of Justice, said that the defendant was part of a police patrol team that conducted a stop and search operation on April 5, 2023, along the Ugbolu Asaba Road in the state capital.
Speaking to reporters following the verdict, Edema stated, “Today’ s verdict is a landmark decision because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and society as a whole.Mr Ifeanyi Ibeh, the deceased’ s elder brother, who saw the judgment, also praised the court for doing justice to his family.
The Delta State Police Command has verified the arrest and imprisonment of a police inspector named Ebri Ubi in connection with the suspected murder of a trader, Mr. Onyeka Ibe, in Asaba. DSP Bright Edafe, the command’ s spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the trigger- happy inspector was alleged to have shot and killed Mr. Ibe while on Stop and Search duty along Ugbolu- Illah Road in Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. According to Edafe, the inspector was arrested on the orders of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Muhammed Ali.
