STRIKE RESUMED? SEE NLC’s Next Line Of Action After New Minimum Wage Proposal Was Increased To #62000 Only
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are eagerly awaiting President Bola
Tinubu’s decision on the newly proposed N62, 000 minimum wage. This proposal is a result of extensive discussions between the Federal Government, organised labour, and the Organised Private Sector, and was formally adopted during a recent meeting of the Tripartite Committee on the new minimum wage in Abuja.
The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the President’ s response will be pivotal in shaping organised labour’s next steps. The proposal has been met with mixed reactions from various stakeholders. While the committee settled on 462, 000, some labour representatives initially resisted this figure, arguing that it was insufficient given the

Festus Osifo, the TUC President, was
among the vocal critics of the proposal, insisting that labour would not accept anything less than #250, 000 as a fair minimum wage. This stark difference highlights the ongoing tension between labour demands and what the government deems feasible.
The NLC has also criticized state governors for their reluctance to meet even the previously proposed #60, 000 minimum wage, describing their stance as harmful to economically vulnerable groups. Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and TUC President Osifo confirmed the N62, 000 figure at the conclusion of the Tripartite Committee meeting, stating that this recommendation would be forwarded to President Tinubu for further action.
Governor Uzodimma explained that
once the President receives the committee’s recommendation, he is expected to submit an executive bill to the National Assembly, which will then outline the final minimum wage figure. This process mirrors the establishment of the current #30,000 minimum wage, which was initially suggested at a lower figure before being increased by the then-president before legislative approval. In addition to the formal meetings and discussions, there have been significant appeals and rejections from various quarters. The Federal Government initially offered ₩60,000, which was rejected by labour representatives who then adjusted their demand down to N250, 000 from an initial #497,000.

Labour leaders argue that the government’ s offers have been Inadequate, with some leaders. insisting that any realistic minimum wage must reflect the current economic realities and the cost of
living in Nigeria. On the other hand, government officials, including the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, have urged labour to be considerate and recognize the economic challenges facing the country. She highlighted the government’ s commitment to securing a fair wage while balancing economic recovery efforts post- pandemic. The outcome of these negotiations remains uncertain as the tripartite committee is set to meet daily for further discussions. President Tinubu’ s decision will be crucial in resolving this impasse and determining the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers (Naija News). As the nation awaits his verdict, the ongoing dialogue underscores the complex interplay between economic policy and
workers’ welfare in Nigeria.
