Two females are being investigated by the Lagos Police Command for selling their organs to a medical specialist in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. Vanguard reported that adolescent females sold their organs for #200, 000 without their parents’ approval. The youngsters conspired with an adult member of their church to visit Redwood Specialist Hospital in Abeokuta, where their organs were sold for #100,000.
The incident was brought to light on September 12, 2022, when one of the teenagers began vomiting. Her father took her to the hospital, believing that she had typhoid or malaria. Medical testing later indicated that her anus and private parts had been damaged. When the daughter recovered consciousness, she told her father that a female church member had transported them to Ogun state and sold their organs.
She revealed that the trafficker persuaded them to undergo the unlawful treatment by promising them N100, 000 each due to inadequate payment from one of the teenager’s fathers, a Bishop. The trafficker allegedly threatened to kill them if they told their parents.
The teenagers said that the trafficker took them to Redwood Hospital in Abeokuta and colluded with the doctor, known as Dr Durodola, to inject them with narcotics. They were then forcibly transported to PDF Hospital in. Surulere, Lagos, where their organs were unlawfully extracted, resulting in great pain and bleeding. The youngsters were eventually transferred to another hospital in Surulere, where tests and scans revealed that the treatment had caused damage to their liver, uterus, urinary bladder, kidney, spleen, and gallbladder.
One of the youngsters’ dads, a bishop, reported the incident to the lyana- Ipaja police station, which forwarded it to the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Bureau (SCIID) in Panti, Yaba, Lagos, for further inquiry.
Barrister Ikechukwu Chiaha, the Bishop’s counsel, suspected police compromise after investigators proposed an amicable solution and payment of #300, 000, including a N200, 000 cut for the police. As a result, Barrister Chiaha moved the matter to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which had launched a new investigation.
In her defense, the main suspect, Adeleke, claimed that the youngsters offered to donate their eggs after overhearing her phone discussion with a doctor. She claimed they were rewarded with 100, 000. David Hundeyin, a spokesman for the Lagos State Police, confirmed that the treatment was legal and carried out by a trained doctor, with all relevant documentation signed by the youngsters, who claimed to be above 18. The girls were warned that they could experience pain for two days after the treatment. Unfortunately, they did not inform their father, who is now seeking #200 million in compensation.
