According to eyewitnesses, the conflict began when a scavenger attempted to steal a woman’ s pot of soup, an act that is widely considered a desperate and despicable move. The woman, however, quickly alerted her neighbors and passersby, who promptly overpowered and beat up the scavenger. Seeking revenge and fueled by anger, the scavenger mobilized a group of hoodlums, who returned around 8:00 pm, armed with machetes, clubs, and stones.
The group launched a random and vicious attack on residents, resulting in the killing of the woman whose pot of soup was initially stolen. Unfortunately, two other innocent bystanders, a woman and a young. boy, were also caught in the crossfire and lost their lives. The victims were reportedly attacked without mercy, leaving the community in a state of devastation and despair.
The police were promptly called to the scene, and they successfully restored. order, but no arrests were made, leaving the community with a sense of injustice and frustration. To prevent further violence, the police have increased their presence in the Byazhin area of Kubwa, patrolling the region to prevent the scavengers from regrouping and causing more harm. The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Bennett Igweh, downplayed the incident, describing it as a disturbance” and claiming that no one died, a statement that has been widely criticized as inaccurate and insensitive. However, eyewitnesses and residents of the community have confirmed the deaths of three individuals, with one victim receiving treatment for machete wounds at a local hospital.
