The Kano State Hisbah Board has detained 20 individuals, both men and women, for engaging in communal bathing.
This action was taken by the officials of Operation Kau Da Badala, a unit of the Hisbah Board responsible for enforcing moral conduct in the state.
The arrest took place following. reports and subsequent verification by the Hisbah officials. According to Dr. Haruna Ibn- Sina, the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, the arrested individuals were found in the act of bathing together, which is considered a violation of the religious and moral standards upheld in Kano State.
Dr. Ibn-Sina explained that communal bathing among unrelated individuals of opposite genders is not only frowned upon but also explicitly prohibited under the Sharia law governing Kano State. The individuals were apprehended in various locations within the state where these communal bathing activities were occurring. The operation aimed to curb such immoral behaviors that are seen as corrupting public decency and religious values.
Following their arrest, the detainees were taken to the Hisbah office for further questioning and subsequent
legal action. The Hisbah Board reiterated its commitment to maintaining moral discipline in Kano State, emphasizing that such operations would continue to ensure that residents adhere to the
prescribed moral and religious norms. The Hisbah Board also urged the public to report any similar activities, assuring that confidentiality would be maintained and swift action taken to address any breaches of moral conduct.
In January, the Kano State Hisbah Board detained over 52 commercial tricycle operators, commonly known as Yan Adaidaita Sahu, on charges of sporting immoral haircuts, “dealing in illegal drugs and substances, and transporting mixed-gender passengers in their tricycles. These individuals were apprehended by Hisbah operatives from various locations across Kano city. These crackdown is part of a recent Initiative by the Hisbah command named “Operation Kau da Badala (Operation Fight Against Immorality).
The purpose of this campaign is to cleanse the state of various immoral activities, including prostitution, drug abuse, and the sale and consumption of alcohol, among other vices. Following the arrest, the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, Mujahid Aminuddeen, addressed the arrested tricycle operators. He encouraged them to act as respectable ambassadors of Islam and Kano State by avoiding social vices and behaviors that could tarnish the image of their religion and local culture.
Aminuddeen stressed the importance of upholding the moral and cultural values of the Kano people, urging the operators to desist from actions that could bring disrepute
The alleged violations committed by the tricycle operators include wearing only shorts while riding, displaying objectionable posters on their vehicles, having inappropriate haircuts, mixing unrelated men and women in their tricycles, selling illegal drugs, and transporting women to locations where they engage in immoral acts. Aminuddeen made it clear that such behavior and activities are unacceptable to Muslims and cannot be tolerated. He emphasized the need for the tricycle operators to recognize the negative implications of these acts on their religion and cultural heritage.
The Hisbah Board is determined to continue monitoring and curbing illegal activities among tricycle operators, focusing on those who persist in such behaviors despite warnings Following their arrest, the tricycle riders were taken to the Hisbah Board’ s headquarters, where they were counseled on the consequences of their actions by officials. After receiving this admonishment, the tricycle operators were released. The Hisbah Board’ s origoing efforts are part of a broader mission to maintain moral and religious standards in Kano State, aiming to preserve the integrity of the community by addressing and mitigating activities that contravene Islamic principles and the local cultural ethos. The board remains committed to taking necessary actions against those who engage in behaviors that undermine the moral fabric of the society.
