In a surprising turn of events, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly expressed regret over his decision to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara as his successor in Rivers State. Wike’s endorsement of Fubara, who previously served as his Accountant-General, was seen as a significant gesture of support, especially considering the numerous contenders for the position.
After a successful victory in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary, where Fubara secured 721 votes, he went on to win the governorship election in March. The situation escalated when a Rivers High Court restrained lawmakers loyal to Wike from acting as members of the state assembly. Despite these challenges, Wike remained resolute, urging the lawmakers not to fear any injunctions and to continue following due process.
Addressing a gathering in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers, Wike assured the lawmakers that they would not be removed from office and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace. He expressed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and encouraged others to do the same.
Reflecting on his decision to support Fubara, Wike publicly admitted his mistake and asked for forgiveness from the people of Rivers State. He vowed to correct this mistake at the appropriate time, acknowledging that he is only human and bound to make errors in judgment. He said, “If they like, they can go to anybody by 2am or 4am to get injunction. The law will take its course.
We must follow due process. Do not fear. Your positions as lawmakers are secure. Many of you may not comprehend our approach.
Our duty is to instill fear in them. This is my strategy. They will be provoked daily, leading to more mistakes. Therefore, do not fret. We will not fund anyone to procure weapons for violence. I have upheld peace, and I urge you all to do the same.
“No one can dictate where I live or go. However, I urge everyone to maintain peace, adhere to the law, and respect due process. We will reach a resolution. I stand tall and think critically. I am accompanied by Senator Magnus Abe and associate with intelligent individuals.”
