Tragically, on May 4 in Brits, North West, a South African woman named Tracy Smeers was allegedly sexually assaulted and killed by her friend’ s boyfriend. Tracy was watching her friend after she went out for the evening, according to a post made by the non-profit organization Women For Change.
Tracy was attacked while she slept by the friend’ s boyfriend, who allegedly returned later and claimed he was checking on the kids. She was allegedly raped by him, and he killed her with a knife.
The community was shocked by Tracy’ s untimely demise, and on May 10 she was laid to rest. The violence and cruelty that women experience at the hands of men is starkly brought to light by this horrifying incident. The incident is made even more tragic by the fact that Tracy was attacked and killed by someone she trusted- someone who was meant to be a friend.
In a related incident, Mrs. Deborah Abiodun, 55, was allegedly raped and killed by a man named James Emmanuel, who was placed under remand by an Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court.
Anwana Josephine, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the suspect had committed the crime on January 17, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p. m. The accusation made against the defendant read, “That you James Emmanuel’ m’ on the 17th day of January 2024 at about 11:00 pm at llere, on Ijare Road, Akure in the Akure Magisterial District, did rape Deborah Abiodun’f’ aged 55 years old and thereby committed an offense, contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006. These two instances serve as a stark reminder of the disturbing prevalence of sexual assault and gender-based violence in our culture.
