In a distressing incident in Lagos State, Pastor Godwin John of Royal Life Christian Church fell victim to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by a 40-year-old woman named Ajoke Jimoh.
Under the false pretense of renting out a parcel of land for the construction of a church, Ajoke Jimoh managed to swindle Pastor John out of a staggering sum of N150 million.
The deceit took place at Raheem Street, ljesha Bus Stop, Ayobo area of Lagos, where the purported land was located.
Upon encountering Jimoh, Pastor John, driven by divine guidance to establish a place of worship, was lured by her promise to lease the land to him for the specified amount.
Little did he know, Jimoh had devised a plan to defraud him.
After transferring the money, she absconded without delivering the promised land or reimbursing Pastor John.
Upon realizing the deception, Pastor John promptly reported the matter to the authorities at the Ayobo Division Police station.
In response, the police swiftly apprehended Ajoke Jimoh and detained her for questioning regarding her fraudulent actions.
Following a thorough interrogation, it became evident to the police that Jimoh had neither ownership of the land nor the intention to fulfill her agreement with Pastor John.
Moreover, she had already spent the ill- gotten money, leaving her unable to reimburse the pastor.
Consequently, the police pressed charges against Ajoke Jimoh for obtaining money under false pretenses and theft.
The case was brought before the Ogba Magistrate Court, where Jimoh pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against her.
During the court proceedings, the prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, requested a date for the hearing to allow the police to present evidence establishing Jimoh’ s culpability in the alleged offenses.
In response, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. B. O. Osunsanmi, granted Jimoh bail in the amount of N100, 000, with the requirement of one surety who must demonstrate a verifiable means of livelihood and address.
Despite being granted bail, Ajoke Jimoh was remanded in custody at the correctional center in Kirikiri town, Lagos, until she could fulfill the conditions of her release.
