In a shocking turn of events, the Rivers State Police Command has apprehended 16 suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Police Inspector Christiana Erekere, a devoted mother of four in Taabaa, Khana Local Government Area of the state. The incident reportedly unfolded when the suspects, traveling from Delta State to Akwa Ibom State for a wedding, were stopped at a police checkpoint. A dispute arose over the validity of a vehicle document, sparking a violent confrontation. Eyewitnesses recount the harrowing scene: “Inspector Christiana Erekere, while on duty at Taabaa Division, was beaten to death by a group of individuals traveling in three vehicles from Delta State to Akwa- Ibom State for a marriage ceremony. The boys were intercepted at a stop-and- search point by a police officer. The deceased saw the way the boys were chasing her superior officer; she started raising the alarm for help, but unfortunately, no one was there to assist. The boys quickly attacked her because they said she was making a video of them. Even when she fainted, they continued beating her and left her. The family of the deceased is understandably devastated and is calling for justice. Nule Felix, the victim’s elder sister, expressed the family’s anguish: “She has been deposited in the mortuary. She was a
widow with four children and her aged
mother who is over 80 years. We are
seeking Justice.”
In response, the Rivers State Police Command has taken swift action, arresting 16 suspects involved in the heinous act. SP Grace Iringe- Koko, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing. The state. Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, personally visited the victim’s family to offer condolences and assure them that justice will be served.
The Command has released a statement regarding the incident:” Preliminary investigations reveal that the incident occurred when a group of individuals traveling in a Lexus salon car was stopped for routine checks at a checkpoint. However, the occupants became agitated and launched a
violent attack against Inspector
Erekere, accusing her of recording a
video of their disruptive behavior. The
severity of the assault caused Inspector Erekere to lose consciousness, and she was immediately transported to Nnadum.
