Disorder erupted at the Science Equipment Market situated at the Onitsha Bridgehead in Anambra State on the evening of February 16, 2024, when members of the State Anti- Touting Squad allegedly fatally shot one person and wounded several others.
The uproar began as the officers, reportedly pursuing an individual who had urinated in a restricted area and then fled into the market, initiated their search.
Eyewitnesses stated that the officers discharged their firearms indiscriminately for over two hours in the vicinity of the market, prompting traders to flee in search of safety. This disorderly evacuation resulted in the destruction and theft of goods owned by numerous individuals. Friday marked a somber day for the market community, as the loss of life stemmed from an incident triggered by a simple act of urination along the Onitsha- Asaba Expressway.
