In order to reassure his numerous fans across Africa that his declaration as a born- again Christian and a pastor was not driven by selfish motives, acclaimed Ghanaian actor Majid Michel emphasized that he is genuinely devoted to serving God. Addressing both skeptics and critics who had previously dismissed his pastor ship as a tactic to maintain his popularity among movie enthusiasts on the continent, Majid, who had been actively sharing his faith on social media, recently underscored on Instagram that his intention was not to seek attention.
Quoting directly from scripture, he wrote, Am I now striving to win the approval of men or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Given the fervor with which he now embraces the gospel, it seems increasingly likely that the actor, now referred to as Evangelist Majid Michel, may transition from the screen to the pulpit in the near future.
As evidence of this potential shift, Majid served as a guest speaker at a three-day Leadership Summit hosted at the Strong Tower Parish of the Fire of Life Ministries, a Christian organization in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, last May. Furthermore, reflecting on his experience on the set of Emem Isong s’ Ayamma’ in an interview with our correspondent in October 2016, Majid disclosed his genuine motivation as a born-again actor when he remarked, ” I have come to understand that the authority of Jesus Christ must be established in every culture and tradition.
I firmly believe that Jesus came to cleanse these cultures and abolish them. He also came to eradicate our traditions and supplant them with His kingdom on earth. I believe that true culture is the way of God.”
Nevertheless, Majid is not the first prominent Nollywood actor to undergo a sudden transformation into a Christian evangelist or pastor.
Many fans still recall how Eucharia Anunobi, one of Nollywood’ s most beloved actresses, caused a stir in the entertainment industry when she announced her conversion to born- again Christianity in 1997.
Twenty years later, despite acknowledging in an interview with an online newspaper that her conversion initially subjected her to ridicule within the film industry, the actress appears to have successfully transitioned into her role as a pastor. Just as Eucharia continued acting, it is plausible that Majid may maintain his status as a pastor while continuing to entertain his fans on screen.
