A High Court located in Apo, Abuja, has placed Senator Benson Konbowei, who is currently serving, under detention at Kuje Correctional Center due to accusations of forging his NYSC exemption certificate. The Bayelsa Central Senator was charged on March 26, 2024, before Justice Christopher Oba.
Konbowei was charged by the Inspector General of Police with illegally forging a ” Certificate of Exemption” with the number 000256454 and dated July 4, 2008, in the case designated CR/028/2023.
Sections 366, 156, and 158 of the Penal Code Act (CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990) were broken, according to the police, and the Senator was subject to penalty under Section 364 of the same Act.
When the Senator was first charged earlier on Tuesday, he entered a not guilty plea. He was given permission to return home by the court, and his bail application hearing was rescheduled until Thursday, March 28, 2024.
The court gave the Senator N50 million in bail with two sureties after hearing arguments from the attorneys involved in the case. According to Justice Oba, the sureties had to be landowners in the Federal Capital Territory with Certificates of Occupancy.
However, the senator was placed under detention in the Kuje Correctional Center by the judge until his bail requirements were fulfilled. The hearing on the subject was postponed to June 24, 25, and 27.
