Former Tanzanian President All Hassan Mwinyi, widely recognized for his pivotal role in transitioning the East African nation towards free- market economics, has passed away at the age of 98, announced current President Samia Suluhu Hassan in a televised address on Thursday.
Mwinyi assumed office following the departure of Tanzania’ s first post- Independence president, Julius Nyerere, who stepped down in 1985 after a 22- year tenure.
President Hassan conveyed her condolences to Mwinyi’ s family, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians, expressing sorrow over the loss.
Credited with implementing free- market policies during his tenure, Mwinyi played a significant role in shaping Tanzania’ s economic landscape. His leadership paved the way for further economic reforms and development initiatives in the country.
Following his presidency, Mwinyi was succeeded by the late Benjamin Mkapa in 1995, marking the continuation of Tanzania’ s democratic governance.
President Hassan revealed that Mwinyi passed away at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer. He had been receiving medical care since November, according to Hassan’s statement.
“I’m saddened to announce the death… around 5: 30 in the evening, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on state television TBC1, adding that he had been receiving treatment for lung cancer.
Mwinyi’s legacy extends beyond his tenure as president, as he is remembered for his contributions to Tanzania’s socio-economic progress and his commitment to advancing the nation’ s interests on the global stage.
