A year after the controversial 2023 presidential election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally revealed the reason behind the failure of its result viewing portal (IReV) during the poll.
The commission said it was due to a configuration bug that prevented the upload of the presidential election results to the public website.
The IReV portal was one of the Innovations introduced by INEC to enhance the transparency and credibility
of the electoral process.
It was supposed to show the images of the original polling unit result sheets (Form EC8A) as scanned and uploaded by the presiding officers.
However, on the day of the election, the portal only displayed the results of the National Assembly elections, while the presidential election resuits returned an HTTP server error.
This sparked a lot of suspicion and criticism from the opposition parties, civil society groups, and the public, who accused INEC of manipulating the
results in favour of the ruling party.
The presidential election was won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who defeated Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
In a comprehensive post-mortem report on the 2023 general election released on Friday, INEC explained the technical glitch that caused the IReV failure.
The report, which was obtained by The Cable, said the commission created 470 election types for the presidential and National Assembly elections, consisting of one presidential constituency covering the entire country, 109 senatorial districts, and 360 Federal constituencies.
The report said each senatorial district and federal constituency election on the database was mapped to their respective states, but the presidential election result was a single, countrywide constituency and did not belong to any state.
This made it impossible for the application to create and build a folder structure to organize the uploaded images of the result sheets of the presidential election.
The report said the problem was first reported at 4 pm on Election Day and was partially resolved in four hours. It admitted that it was a key challenge that Impacted on the public perception of the election and elicited widespread commentary across the country.
It also said the commission had learned
from the experience and would ensure that such errors do not occur in future
elections.
The report also highlighted other achievements and challenges of the 2023 general election, such as the introduction of new technologies, the Improvement of voter education and
participation, the conduct of security agencies, the role of the media and observers, and the management of electoral disputes.
The report concluded by thanking all the
stakeholders who contributed to the success of the election and calling for more support and cooperation in the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.
