Tension As Yoruba, Hausa Clash In Lagos, One Feared dead, Market Shut Down
On Friday, 23rd February 2024, following a heated tribal clash between the Hausa and Yoruba traders inside the Oluwole Market in Ogba, which is situated in Ojodu Local Council Development Area of Lagos state, all commercial operations were suspended as locals and motorcycle riders commonly known as Okada drivers were observed to be running helter skelter in varied directions.
The unfortunate occurrence started during the early hours of Friday morning, whereby there was a serious fight between indigenous Yoruba and Hausa people in the above-mentioned location. which caused pandemonium in the region after a Hausa Okada rider killed a Yoruba man during the clash.
When contacted, an eyewitness who doesn’t want his name mentioned to the general public revealed to newsmen that, an unidentified man is said to have stabbed a young man named Abbey on Thursday night after he tried to separate a fight between two Hausa men, leaving him in a pool of blood.
Sadly, before Abbey (a Yoruba man) gave up the ghost, he was seen to be bleeding heavily, which led to a retaliation between the Yoruba and Hausa people in the vicinity. As a result of the retaliatory attack, food products sold by Hausa traders including peppers and onions were destroyed and many of them were chased away from their shops.
In addition, the Yoruba people went wild as they turned the marketplace into a war zone as they viciously attacked an Hausa man in sight. When the Hausa Indigenes realized that things were getting out of hand, they were forced to react which only made the situation worst as other traders had to flee from their respective shops in order to avoid getting killed in the process coupled with the fact that there were no security men on ground to regulate the conflict.
Meanwhile, when the Superintendent of Police, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson and public relations officer (PPRO) for the Lagos State Police Command was contacted all calls and text messages sent to him were left unanswered but it was affirmed that some police vans were spotted at the marketplace moments after the heated clash in an effort to restore peace to the region and return things to normal before
any more fatality occurs
