Lucky Alyedatiwa, the governor of Ondo
State, recently made a significant announcement regarding his political aspirations. He declared his intention to vie for the esteemed position of governor in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Aiyedatiwa’s proclamation. came to light on a Friday, a poignant day marked by the burial of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who tragically passed away on December 27, 2023, after battling prostate cancer.
In his recent declaration, Aiyedatiwa emphasized his unwavering commitment to serving the people of Ondo State. He underscored the profound responsibility bestowed upon him by the electorate and expressed his conviction in carrying forward Akeredolu’ s enduring legacy.
In his address to the public, Aiyedatiwa articulated his reluctance to occupy the governor’s office for merely one year. He firmly asserted his mandate to fulfill the aspirations of the people and champion the development initiatives initiated by his predecessor.
Aiyedatiwa’s decision to seek the nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC) underscores his allegiance to the party’s principles and values. He called upon fellow party members to rally behind him in his quest to secure the party’s nomination and uphold its vision for progress and prosperity in Ondo State.
With his declaration, Aiyedatiwa embarks. on a transformative journey, poised to navigate the intricate landscape of governance and steer Ondo State towards a brighter future. As he charts his course, the electorate awaits with anticipation, eager to witness the unfolding chapters of Ondo State’s political narrative under his leadership.
“I can’t be governor for one year. I have to complete the four-year term that we were elected for. I have the blessing of the late governor and the support of the people of Ondo state. I am ready to serve and take Ondo state to greater heights,” Aiyedatiwa said.
Aiyedatiwa, hailing from Obe- Nla, an oil- bearing community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo state, previously served as a commissioner of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He also held the position of deputy governor of Ondo state from 2021 to 2023 under Akeredolu’ s administration.
He lauded Akeredolu as a courageous leader and unwavering advocate for the people, dedicated to the development and security of Ondo state and the southwest region. Aiyedatiwa pledged to continue the projects and policies initiated by Akeredolu, particularly in
infrastructure, education, health,
agriculture, and industrialization.
Furthermore, Aiyedatiwa vowed to
collaborate with other governors in the region to fortify the Amotekun security network, spearheaded by Akeredolu, He expressed his commitment to fostering peace and unity among the people of Ondo state while upholding the rule of law and human rights.
The burial of Akeredolu, the former chairman of the southwest governors forum, drew dignitaries from across the country, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman
Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as several governors and former governors. Akeredolu was laid to rest at his country home in Owo, amidst tears and tributes. The Ondo state gubernatorial election is
slated to take place in October 2024. The
main opposition party, the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP), has yet to
announce its candidate for the race.
