In a shocking development, soldiers opened fire on Thursday after suspected criminals hijacked trailers loaded with food in the Suleja Area of Niger State. According to witness Alhassan Abdullahi, many trailers coming from Abuja and heading for Kaduna were blocked by the criminals who set fire to tires on the road. He noted that many bags of food, especially rice, were stolen before soldiers arrived.

He said, The soldiers intervened and fired gunshots into the air to scare the criminals away. However, many of them managed to escape with bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, and other food Items. We also heard that commercial motorcycle riders are also planning a protest. They would have started yesterday, but we are not sure what stopped them.”

This incident occurs amid the nationwide hardship that has led to protests in various parts of Nigeria. On February 16, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced a two-day nationwide mass protest for February 27 and 28. NLC President Joe Ajaero made this announcement at Labour House, Abuja, during an emergency meeting. Ajaero explained that the decision to protest was made after the expiration of the 14- day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government regarding the nationwide hardship.

Daily Trust reported that the deadline. was given to push for reforms addressing the current difficulties faced by Nigerians. Recently, the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Muhammad Sa’ ad Abubakar III, expressed concern that Nigeria is in a dangerous situation, with millions of young Nigerians unemployed and hungry.

Speaking at the 6th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna, the Sultan stated that the economic challenges in Nigeria had escalated to the point where citizens were upset, furious, and starving.

He remarked, We have now entered a new era of leadership. Some new governors have assumed office, while. others are starting their second term, yet we are still grappling with insecurity Issues. Adding to the problem, we are also dealing with a growing level of poverty. Many of our people lack stable sources of income.

“Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that discussing insecurity and the increasing poverty level are crucial matters that we cannot ignore. I have reiterated this several times in various forums that things are not going well in Nigeria, and certainly, things are not well in the North.

Two days earlier, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, lamented the widespread hunger and starvation in the country, urging First Lady Remi Tinubu, who had visited him to discuss the plight of Nigerians, to convey the message to her husband.
