TROUBLE! Days After Akpabio Publicly Tagged Emefiele As Nigeria’s Destroyer; SEE What Happened Next That Shocked Everyone
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has dragged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to court for defamation, demanding a whopping N1 billion as damages.
This comes after Akpabio allegedly made some derogatory remarks about Emefiele’ s role in the Nigerian economy and the ongoing corruption probe against him.
According to a notice sent to Akpabio by Emefiele’ s lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, on February 19, 2024, the Senate President had said on February 18, 2024, that Emefiele left the Nigerian economy in a mess and the Federal Government does not know what to charge him with.
Akpabio made this statement at a Thanksgiving service by Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Emefiele, through his lawyer, considered Akpabio’s comment” false, distorted and clearly aimed at disparaging his character and indeed made in bad faith” He said Akpabio’s claim was baseless and inaccurate, as he was a major player in the immediate past administration and worked closely with Emefiele. He also reminded Akpabio of the innovations he introduced in the banking sector and the role he played in salvaging Nigeria in the P & ID Saga.
Emefiele’ s lawyer said the Federal Government had since August 14, 2023, preferred charges against Emefiele and his client had pleaded not guilty of the said allegations.
He said Akpabio’ s statement had defamed Emefiele’ s character and caused him great pains and embarrassment. He demanded an unreserved apology from Akpabio and the sum of N1 billion as reasonable compensation.
Furthermore, he warned Akpabio that if he failed to comply with this demand, Emefiele would seek the appropriate redress available to him under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The case between Emefiele and Akpabio has generated countless reactions from Nigerians, who are divided over the Issue. Some have expressed support for Emefiele, saying he was a victim of a political witch- hunt and that Akpabio was trying to divert attention from his scandals.
Others have criticized Ernefiele, s he was responsible for the econo woes of the country and that he should face the consequences of his actions.
