A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday when a 22-year-old man was shot and killed by a police officer in Chekata, Kakamega County. The young man had attacked the officer in an attempt to harm his own mother, who is 68 years. old.
The chain of events began when the man’s older brother visited the Navakholo Police Station to report that his brother, lan Wanjala, had issued death threats against their mother and had armed himself with dangerous weapons including a knife, hoe, and machete. Upon receiving this alarming information, a team of officers, led by the Officer Commanding the Station (OCS), promptly responded to the distress call and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officers discovered that the suspect was indeed armed and actively pursuing his mother. In an effort to defuse the situation, the officers tried to reason with the young man. However, instead of surrendering, the suspect turned his aggression towards the OCS, attempting to sever the officer’s head with a hoe. Fortunately, the OCS managed to evade the attack, although he sustained two broken fingers in the process. In a desperate attempt to escape, the officer fell to the ground, only to be cornered by the suspect who continued his assault with the hoe. Faced with imminent danger, the OCS fired a warning shot into the air as a last resort.
Regrettably, the situation escalated further, and the OCS was left with no choice but to shoot the suspect in the chest in order to protect his own life and that of the still-downed officer. Both the suspect and the injured OCS were swiftly transported to the Navakholo Sub- County Hospital. Tragically, the suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the OCS received immediate first aid and was subsequently transferred to the Kakamega County General Referral Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, the deceased’ s body was respectfully transported to the hospital’ s mortuary, where it will remain until a post-mortem examination can be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their line of duty and underscores the difficult decisions they sometimes have to make to protect themselves and others. The police will conduct a thorough investigation to gather all the necessary facts and evidence surrounding this incident.
