Evangelist, Five Others Sentenced To Death By Hanging For This Horrible Crime
An Akure High Court in Ondo State has handed down death sentences by hanging to an Evangelist, Adewale Adelu, and five others for their participation in armed robberies in the state.
Adelu, along with Ikechuckwu Maduagwu, Fayemi Olubusuyi, Ropo Adeleye, Dele Otopka, and Bayo Omotosho, was convicted of attacking and robbing two commercial banks in Akure and Idanre 13 years ago.
The incidents occurred at the defunct Diamond Bank in Akure and the First Bank in Idanre, with Justice Yemi Fasanmi presiding over the case.
The court found them guilty of four counts, including conspiracy, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms, leading to their sentencing.
The trial began on July 14, 2022, and during the proceedings, the Prosecution Counsel, Salami, presented compelling evidence.
The convicts, armed with AK-47 rifles and dynamite, were proven to have executed the robberies that had a significant impact on the communities of Akure and Idanre
Throughout the trial, the defendants confessed unanimously, detailing their Individual roles in the operations.
“We suddenly heard sporadic gunshots:in the bank premises. And they thereafter, blasted the entrance of the
bank to gain access to the banking hall. “One of the robbers who was masked, asked me to open the box and he packed away all the money in the box, including naira and dollars. And in the process, a policeman identified as Olowoyelu was shot dead,” a witness had said. As a result, Justice Fasanmi pronounced
death sentences by hanging for all the defendants on each of the counts. The convictions and sentences mark a significant development in the legal response to armed robberies that occurred more than a decade ago, emphasizing the commitment to justice. in Ondo State.
