A harrowing wave of bandit attacks has left communities in Kaduna and Katsina States reeling, with death and destruction rampant in their wake. In a report by Mr. Stephen Maikori, Overseer of Kufana District, obtained by Daily Trust, the grim confirmation emerged that assailants had claimed the lives of twelve individuals, leaving seven others gravely wounded.
This latest atrocity follows closely on the heels of a similar assault, where bandits ruthlessly gunned down nine individuals in Kwasam community, Kajuru LGA, and Gwada community in Igabi LGA, both situated within Kaduna State. The brutality of these attacks extended beyond mere casualties, as the perpetrators abducted 35 individuals, among them Zakariya Markus, a retired Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria, along with his brother and sister-in-law.
Describing the morning assault of February 18th, Maikori recounted,” Bandits attacked the community in large numbers around 6 am, mercilessly claiming twelve lives through burning, while inflicting severe injuries upon seven others. Additionally, seventeen residential properties were set ablaze. The toll of devastation didn’t end there, as the assailants indiscriminately opened fire on villagers, although no abductions were reported among their ranks.
The Kaduna State government, faced with this escalating crisis, swiftly responded. Governor Uba Sani, in collaboration with security forces and key stakeholders, vowed to address the security challenges plaguing the region. Expressing condemnation for the attacks, Governor Sani extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and directed the State Emergency Management Agency to expedite assistance to the affected communities.
Meanwhile, Katsina State grappled with its own onslaught of banditry, with recent days witnessing a spate of attacks claiming the lives of at least nine individuals across Batsari, Jibia, and Kankara LGAs. Dr. Nasir Babangida Muazu, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, confirmed the grim toll, noting fatalities in Batsari and injuries sustained in Kankara. The attacks, marked by brazen violence, targeted both community leaders and civilians alike, instilling fear and insecurity among residents.
In a bid to address the escalating threat,
authorities emphasized the need for continued vigilance and concerted efforts to counter banditry. Despite strides made in curtailing their activities, the resilient nature of the assailants underscores the persistent challenge posed by organized criminal networks.
