The Benue State National Assembly Caucus has voiced its concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Benue. State, attributing the alarming rise in Insecurity to a combination of factor: x including the unlawful dissolutior local government councils and th
alleged embezzlement of security funds. At the forefront of these accusations is Governor Alia Hycinth, who stands accused of diverting a staggering N3 billion from the monthly security allocation of the state.
Gathering in Abuja on Wednesday, the caucus deliberated on the pressing issues plaguing the state and underscored the urgency of addressing the root causes of insecurity. Senator Abba Moro, serving as both the convener and the leader of the caucus, conveyed the deep-seated concerns regarding the mismanagement of security funds and its detrimental impact on the safety and well-being of Benue State residents.
In a candid address to the press following the meeting, Senator Moro lamented the pervasive insecurity that has gripped various regions of Benue State. He highlighted a string of recent security breaches, citing instances of violence and unrest in Benue South Senatorial District, Zone B, Makurdi, Guma, Okokolo, Ogwunogbo, Ipole, Ugboju, Abugbe, Ikobi, and numerous other communities in Apa Local Government Area.
Of particular concern is the dire situation unfolding in Ogwumogbo, Agatu Local Government Area, where marauding herdsmen have displaced residents, effectively rendering the community uninhabitable. Additionally, Senator Moro drew attention to the perilous forest terrain between Okokolo in Aqatu and Agagbe in Gwer West Local Government Area, which has become a notorious hotspot for criminal activity, including rampant kidnappings.
In response to these escalating security threats, the caucus issued a fervent appeal to the federal government to take decisive action to quell the violence and restore peace to Benue State. They implored Governor Alia Hycinth to prioritize security initiatives and collaborate closely with law enforcement
agencies to combat the scourge of
insecurity.
Furthermore, the caucus called upon the Nigerian Army to establish forward operating bases in vulnerable areas and urged Operation Whirl Stroke to launch targeted operations to root out criminal elements from the forests. The ultimate goal, as emphasized by Senator Moro, is to facilitate the safe return of displaced communities to their ancestral homes and ensure the long-term security and
stability of Benue State.
